Does my cat really need a special diet for her early renal failure?

Q

My eleven year old cat has been diagnosed with early renal failure. She does not like the special diet that the vet has suggested. Does she really need this?

A

The special “renal” diets for cats contain different levels of nutrients to standard diets, including low protein levels and low phosphorus levels. Studies have shown that cats with kidney disease that are fed these diets live significantly longer if fed on standard diets. There are many different brands and flavours now available, so if your cat does not like one, ask your vet to suggest others that she might prefer.
