How can I fix the crusty flakes inside my dogs ear?

Q

My dog has crusty flakes inside her ear. When I clean her ear with cotton wool and water, these wash away but her ear still looks sore. Is this canker and how can I fix it?

A

“Canker” is the colloquial term for an ear infection, known to vets as “otitis externa”, and yes, that’s what this sounds like. Often there’s an underlying allergy, followed by bacterial and yeast infections of the ear canal and the ear flap. Most cases need a course of an ointment containing antibiotics, anti-yeast drugs and anti-inflammatory medication, and some dogs need tablets too. You definitely need to take her to the vet to get this sorted.
