How can I get my cat to wee in the litter tray?

Q

My two year old female cat keeps weeing beside her litter tray rather than in it. How can I get her to do it in the right place?

A

Cats can be very fussy about where they pass urine. Try an extra litter tray: you should have one for every cat in the house, plus one extra. Put them in places out of public view: cats can be quite private. And try a different litter substrate: some cats like wood pellets, others prefer clay or gravel. Finally, if she keeps doing it, have her checked by your vet: she could have cystitis.
