Is it normal for an older dog to cough every morning?

Q

My ten year old dog has started to cough every morning. She seems normal otherwise. Is this normal for an older dog or should I take her to the vet for treatment?

A

There are many possible causes of coughs, from lungworm to heart disease to bronchitis. Treatment is always possible, and taking no action could possibly be life threatening. The basic rule is that if any animal is showing signs that would make you go to the doctor if a human had them, then you should go to a vet.
