Q

My dog refuses to sit if I don’t offer him a treat.
If I have food, he sits at once, but if I try to get him to behave without a food reward, he won’t do it.
Any tips?

A

Food rewards are very useful for initially training dogs. It’s best to reduce these to intermittent rewards at an early stage, rather than continual use.

Try keeping food in your hand, but just rewarding him every two or three times, gradually reducing it.

Most dogs eventually just learn to sit out of force of habit, with or without food.
