Why is my German shepherd getting a wet bald area on her back?

Q

My one year old German shepherd gets a wet bald area on her back near her tail every few months. It’s costing us a small fortune in vets’ fees. Any advice or ideas on why this is?

A

This sounds like a common skin infection known as a “hot spot” or “acute moist dermatitis”. It can be difficult to identify the precise cause, but allergies to fleas, dusts and pollens can be involved. Regular brushing e.g. even daily, removing the dense fuzzy undercoat, will help keep his skin surface cool, which will help. Meticulous flea control is important, as this can be the cause in some cases, even if you never actually see fleas.
