Will the local fox kill my hens?

Q

I am thinking about getting some backyard hens, but everyone tells me that the local fox will kill them. Is there any way to completely protect hens from foxes?

A

If you set up a secure, impregnable hen house, with a lockable door, this should keep out most foxes. Lock your hens up before dusk, and let them out after breakfast. And in the daytime, keep them in a fenced area which is not easily accessible to foxes. Many people keep hens successfully in back gardens (I have kept them myself for fifteen years without any fox-related incidents).
