According to the Department of Justice, there were 145 reported dog thefts 2018 before an increase to 210 in 2019.

With over 120 dogs stolen in the first half of 2020 alone, the number of stolen dogs is set to skyrocket this year with a huge increase due to Covid-19.

Dog owners across Ireland are beginning to flag warning signs such as markings on dog fences that supposedly indicate there is a potential to steal a dog beyond the fence. There have also been reports of strange objects being placed in gardens.

DSPCA Spokeswoman Gillian Bird said: “Recently we have seen a lot of reports for the medium-sized dogs, which is very interesting. We have seen reports for cocker spaniels and springer spaniels.”
