How much food should I give my dog?

Q

My four month old Miniature Schnauzer scoffs his dinner so greedily that it is all gone within half a minute and he looks for more. I don’t want him to get fat when he grows up. How can I tell how much I should be giving him?

A

Growing dogs should be fed twice daily, and they should be given as much food as they want, within reason. If he is still chasing the empty bowl when he is finished, this suggests that he may need more. Obesity is rare in young dogs, but to be safe, visit your vet clinic to get him weighed and to have his body condition score checked every month. Most vets are happy to give you this advice for free.
